The Times June 15, 1955
Our Hong Kong Correspondence reports that Lieutenant-Commander Max Seaburne-May was buried at sea yesterday from H.M.S. Cockade. he had been stricken with Polio on Sunday and died on Monday. Aged 33, he was born in Kenya and entered the Royal navy through Dartmouth. He became a submarine commander at the age of 22, during the last war, and was awarded the D.S.C. When promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander he was the youngest officer of that rank in the Navy. He leaves a widow and a younger daughter now in Hongkong.
Hi Peter May,
Re Max Seaburne-May.
I appreciate that you have posted a report of my fathers death from the Times (I am the younger daughter mentioned in the article). However, it is not accurate (gosh, what a surprise for a newspaper!!). My father was ill for approximately a week before his death. I’m afraid I have no paperwork that shows this but of course my mother has discussed his illness and death with me. So for the sake of accuracy I would just like to put the facts straight. Thank you. Best wishes Caroline Sams
Caroline,
I am an ex-editor with Lloyd’s of London Press and currently investigating HMS Unruffled as it was the submarine adopted by Colchester, my local town. Have you any memories or details, that will enable me to piece together the history of this boat. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanking you in advance.
