LORD CROFTON.
It is notorious that absenteeism is one of the greatest misfortunes which unhappy Ireland has to contend with. A resident nobleman or gentleman in any part of this country alone sufficient to tranquillize and improve the peasantry of an immense district. We are led into these observations from witnessing one of those blessings which generally result from an intimate intercourse between the Landlord and Tenant.
On Thursday last Lord Crofton having completed his sheepshearing, his Lordship gave a sumptuous entertainment to his shearers and workmen. Upwards of 200 persons sat down to a splendid dinner of roast beef and plum pudding. Tents were erected upon the lawn, the scene was altogether picturesque. After dinner, the merry dance commenced and was kept up to a late hour. The ancient Irish melodies were also sung in the real native plaintive style by many of the old tenantry. It was truly gratifying to observe the pleasure and delight which his Lordship and his amiable Lady took in the joy they had so universally diffused. We sincerely wish that some of our blood-sucking Absentee Landlords had witnessed the happy scene we have thus faintly endeavoured to describe. To them we would say “Go and be likewise.”
