The Love That Broke Me ( Lady Crofton – Ann Brooke)

Daily Mirror- Wednesday 13 October 1976

Love for a debonair charmer landed the former Lady Crofton in a bankruptcy court yesterday.

She blamed her 65,000 crash in her third husband Guy Brooke, who deserted her a year ago.

“I loved him” said Ann Brooke 49, “I let him run up debts in my name to save hime from prison because he was an undischarged bankrupt.”

After the court hearing, whose first marriage to the late Lord Crofton ended in divorce, said; “When you love a man, you will forgive him almost anything.”

Mrs Brooke sad that she met Guy at the same time as her second marriage – to property developer Robert Flach – ended in divorce.

Sipping a glass of beer  in a pub near the court she said; Guy was a debonair and charming.  He swept me off my feet and I fell madly in love with him.”

When he told me he was bankrupt, I became terribly worried about all the money we were spending.  Although I knew it was wrong. I took on his debts in my name.”

He was so romantic. He would whisper to me: “Guess where we are going today darling” and that evening we would be flying off to Canada for a shooting holiday.

When I asked him where all the money was coming from he would smile and say “Don’t worry – its all taken care of.

Te couple flew to America and Europe on business trips.

Once they hired a private plane to visit Scotland  “so that he could bring his dogs.” and on the way called in at a private school attended by one of her sons.

Their grandiose schemes ended in failure.  A nationwide golf tournament idea never got off the ground and a trading stamp promotion flopped.

Mrs Brooke, now living with her father at Ballina Park, Ashford, Co Wicklow. Eire, told the court that she eventually realised that Guy was very irresponsible.  But she added  “I still love Guy and I don’t want to make him sound the most terrible person.”

Mrs Brooke disclosed debts of £ 134,641 (3.2 million in 2025) and a deficiency of £65,271.

Her public examination was adjourned until April 26.
