“You Win” Death Message of Peer’s Heir
Te following message was choked on the garage at Ladywell House, Glasson, Athlone, where the Hon. Edward Charles Crofton (40) heir to Lord Crofton Co. Roscommon, was faint dead:
“You win. She wished it.”
Another message ran:
“I am here three-quarters of an hour. It is nearly all over. I gave my word but you broke yours. God Bless you.”
Mr Crofton was in his car when found. A verdict of “Death by poisoning caused by carbon monoxide inhaled from the exhaust of his car while temporarily insane” was returned.
Mr Crofton was married in 1925 to the daughter of the late John T. Day, of Streatham Park S.W., and there are two children.
IN addition to the above the Daily Herald – Thursday 26 November 1936 wrote
DISMISSED ARMY
Mr Crofton who was aged 40 was formerly a second-lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers, but on August 14, 1916, he was dismissed the Army by sentence of a court martial.
Only a year previous his father had been given command of the 13th battalion of the same regiment…..
Londonderry Sentinel – Thursday 26 November 1936
The Hon. Edward Charles Crofton, son and heir of Lord Crofton, of Mote Park County Roscommon, was found dead yesterday in hi s car in the garage attached to his home, near Athlone.
The engine of the car was running, and he is believed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning, cased by fumes of the engine.
Mr Crofton wh was forty years of age, married in 1925 Cecilia Mabel day, and has two children
His wife was in Dublin when the discovery was made.
Lord Crofton is in Scotland accompanied by his daughter.
At the inquest last night a verdict of death by poisoning caused by carbon monoxide inhaled from his car while temporarily insane was returned
The cook stated that Mr Crofton left Tuesday to go shooting. Next morning a note in his handwriting was found in his study: and Mr Crofton was found lying over the steering wheel. The engine was still running.
A maid stated that she heard the engine running when she went to bed.
A police office said a shotgun and two dead pheasants were in the back of the car. Writing was daubed on the garage wall with dirty oil

Hon Edward Charles Crofton. son and heir to Lord Crofton. of Mote Park, Co. Roscommon, was found dead to-day, seated in his car, in the garage of his residence near Athlone. The engine of the car was running.

TRAGIC DEATH OF PEER’S HEIR
At the inquest last night at Athlone the Hon. Edward Charles Crofton, son and heir of Lord Crofton, of Mote Park, Co. Roscommon, verdict of death due poisoning caused by carbon monoxide inhaled from the exhaust of his car while temporarily insane was returned. He was found dead in the garage at his home yesterday morning.
