This is a short biography of the early life of Edward Rudolf, founderof the Waifs and Strays Society, now called The Children's Society. Edward Rudolf was born on 11 April 1852, in Lambeth, South London,near the Elephant and Castle.
His father, William Edward Rudolf, was retired major, who had servedin the British and Dutch armies.
Edward's father was a friend of the Consular-General of theNetherlands, a Mr May. Mr May helped the family out by giving Edward a higher paying job as a junior clerk at the consulate.
